Schaendorf Cattle Co.
West Michigan Born & Raised
The Schaendorf family has been farming in West Michigan for three generations. In 1994, John Schaendorf and his family purchased an 80-acre dairy farm in Hopkins, Michigan. With humble beginnings, John and his family worked diligently to build their farm. Over the past two decades, the Schaendorf family has cared for their animals and the lane.
In 2016, John and his son, Ben Schaendorf, began Schaendorf Cattle Co. The two realized the need for a transparent business model that was able to communicate food processes from start-to-finish to customers and distributors.
Exceptional Animal Welfare Practices
Schaendorf cares about their cows and their well-being. One thing that separates Schaendorf from their competition, is that their animals are under constant supervision, from start to finish. They call it “birth to beef” traceability. This practice assures that their cattle are always provided with proper housing, nutrition, and quality care.
A happy cow is a healthy cow. They keep their cattle happy and healthy by providing them with clean, low-stress living conditions. They are always free roaming and allowed much more space per animal than conventional methods. Their barn also provides them with year-round shade, airflow, and fresh water. Schaendorf cattle are never given hormones.
Caring for the Earth with Sustainable Practices
As a longstanding family farm, Schaendorf knows that sustainability matters. What does this mean? It means that they produce high quality meat by using farming techniques that preserve the environment and animal welfare. This is done in many ways, such as keeping their carbon footprints small by sourcing local feed, rotating crops properly, and composting their waste. They also use recycled wood as bedding. Altogether, their actions keep tons of material out of landfills each year.
